Heat-reduction solar film for exterior installation
On double glazing above 1.20 m2, exterior installation is a technical requirement. Interior installation on large double glazing can create thermal stress and crack the glass. Our exterior solar films intercept infrared radiation before it reaches the pane, with heat rejection up to 83%. Scratch-resistant and weather-resistant, they deliver about 5 years durability on vertical glazing.
Everything about exterior installation solar film
When should you choose exterior installation?
Exterior installation becomes necessary as soon as glazing configuration requires it. This applies to all double and triple glazing units above 1.20 m², laminated glazing regardless of size, curtain-wall facades on office and retail buildings, and all inclined glazing such as verandas, glass roofs, and roof windows.
It is also preferred when maximum performance is the goal. A film installed on the exterior rejects solar radiation before it even passes through the first pane. The glass heats up far less, and so does the room. On highly exposed facades, the difference versus interior installation typically means an additional 2 to 3°C reduction indoors.
Why exterior installation removes thermal stress risk
When a film is applied to the inner face of double glazing, it absorbs part of solar energy and releases it as heat between the two glass layers. On large surfaces, this accumulation creates temperature differences between the center and the edges of the pane. Glass then expands unevenly and may crack spontaneously.
By applying the film to the outer face, this mechanism is eliminated. Radiation is intercepted before reaching the glazing, the glass remains at a more uniform temperature, and breakage risk is removed. This is why all film and glazing manufacturers prescribe exterior installation beyond 1.20 m² on double glazing. It is not excessive caution, it is a technical rule based on glass physics.
Resistance and durability in exterior conditions
This is a frequent question on site: does a film installed outdoors last over time? The answer is yes, provided the product is designed for exterior use. Our exterior solar films are made from metallized polyester with a scratch-resistant surface treatment and built-in UV protection. They withstand rain, frost, temperature cycles, and routine cleaning.
On vertical glazing, observed lifespan is generally 7 to 10 years in European climates. On inclined glazing such as verandas or roof windows, service life is usually around 5 to 7 years due to stronger direct radiation and driving rain. The film can be replaced easily without changing the glazing, making it a maintenance solution rather than a heavy capital expense.
For which buildings and sectors?
Our exterior films are widely used on office buildings and headquarters where large glazed facades are standard, on shopping centers and hotels with curtain-wall facades, on verandas and glass roofs in restaurants and reception areas, on roof windows in schools and public buildings, and in thermal-renovation projects for listed buildings or cost-constrained properties where glazing replacement is not feasible.
In all these situations, exterior film significantly improves thermal comfort without changing existing frames. Installation is completed in a few days with no operational shutdown, which makes it the most pragmatic option for property and facility managers.
Installation process and intervention conditions
The installation technique is the same as for interior film: glass cleaning, wet application, and squeegee finishing. The difference is in intervention conditions. Temperature must be above 10°C, with no rain and no strong wind. Frost in the 10 days after installation must be avoided. These weather constraints mean exterior projects are usually planned between April and October in most French regions.
Full drying takes 2 to 4 weeks. After that period, the film can be cleaned with a standard ammonia-free glass cleaner and a soft cloth. No metal squeegee and no high-pressure cleaner directly on the film. One to two maintenance cleanings per year are enough to preserve transparency and performance.
