Electric films for glazing
A transparent glazing that becomes opaque when you press a button, then returns to transparent when you release it. No blinds, no curtains, no visible mechanism. Just glass that changes state in a fraction of a second. Our switchable opacity electric film makes this possible on any existing glazing. It is installed like a standard film, connected to a power supply, and controlled via wall switch, remote control, or home automation integration. Adhesive version for existing glazing or integrated version between two panes for new projects.
Switchable opacity film: glazing that obeys
How does it work?
The film contains a layer of liquid crystals dispersed in a polymer. Without current, the crystals are randomly oriented and scatter light in all directions: the film is opaque, milky white, like frosted glass. When an electric current is applied, the crystals align instantly and allow light to pass through: the film becomes transparent.
The switch takes less than a second. There is no stable intermediate state by default: it is either transparent or opaque. However, with a suitable dimmer, you can adjust the opacity level by varying the voltage, allowing semi-transparent states to control light and privacy.
Consumption is low: about 5 watts per square meter in transparent mode. In opaque mode, the film consumes nothing since it is not powered. This is the opposite of a motorized blind, which consumes power while moving: here, the film only consumes when it is clear.
Adhesive or integrated version
The adhesive film is installed on the inner face of existing glazing. The glass is cleaned, the film is applied using a wet installation method, and the built-in electrical connections are linked to a low-voltage transformer. It is the retrofit solution for existing buildings that want to add switchable opacity without replacing the glazing.
The integrated version places the film between two glass panes to form a ready-to-install glazing unit. The finish is cleaner: no visible film edges, no visible cables, with connections integrated into the frame. This is the preferred solution for architects in new builds and high-end renovations. Standard or custom sizes available.
Control: from simple switch to full home automation
Control level adapts to the project. At the simplest level, a wall switch turns the film on and off. One click, the glazing becomes transparent. One click, it becomes opaque. This is enough for a meeting room or medical office.
A remote control allows you to operate the film from a distance, useful for high or hard-to-reach glazing.
Home automation integration offers advanced possibilities. The film can connect to KNX, Crestron, Loxone, or any standard home automation protocol. You can program scenarios: opaque when the projector turns on, transparent when the meeting ends, semi-transparent at the end of the day to filter low-angle sunlight. The film becomes part of a smart building.
Most relevant applications
Glass meeting rooms are the main use case. Transparent when available, opaque when a confidential meeting begins. No more Venetian blinds that break or permanent frosted films that close off the space.
Medical offices and healthcare spaces use the film for on-demand privacy. The practitioner makes the glass opaque during consultations and transparent between patients. The switch is instant and silent.
High-end hospitality uses the film for shower walls, bedroom partitions, and spa areas. Guests control bathroom privacy via a wall switch. It adds a premium feature that makes a difference.
Showrooms and exhibition spaces use the film as a scenographic tool. The glass switches from transparent to opaque to create a reveal effect: hide the product, obscure, then reveal it. It also works as a projection screen.
Executive offices, video conferencing rooms, phone booths, and VIP spaces complete the main applications—anywhere privacy needs to be adjustable without compromising aesthetics.
Projection on glazing: the bonus
In opaque mode, the film forms a uniform white surface that works as a projection screen. You can project onto it from behind or in front. The image quality is comparable to a standard projection screen. The glazing becomes a window, a privacy wall, and a presentation screen all at once.
